Family Run Business Celebrates 50 Years

Robert Hullfish has owned his family-run auto repair business for 50 years. He bought the business when he was 23 years old. The previous owner let neighborhood kids hang out and fix their cars at the shop and Hullfish wanted to keep that feel for his business Bob’s Auto Service.

Back in 1963, he borrowed money from his family to purchase the property. It included the shop and a house on the neighboring lot. For 47 years, Hullfish towed cars for the Lawrence Police. The shop included gas pumps until the 90s. The shop continues to service approximately 20 to 25 cars per week.

The work at the shop, done by Bob and his son Wayne, is primarily mechanical in nature. They do shock repairs, air conditioner repair, tune ups, brake jobs and more. Wayne is in charge of the computer diagnostics. Much of their work comes from word of mouth. They are loyal to their customers and their customers are loyal to them.

Hullfish considers the shop an ideal situation, making his ‘commute’ to work just a short walk. When he and his wife had kids, he was never more than 20 steps away from home while at work. This family atmosphere is felt in the shop where customers have grown up bringing their vehicles to Bob’s Auto Service for repair. One of their family traditions is to pressure wash the floors of the garage and stage a great feast each Christmas. Through the years the event became party that this past year included almost 100 people.
